Evaluation Re - Upload

Evaluation

The theme of my project is the interior of a bowling alley. I chose this because i thought the idea was simple but allowed me to do a lot with all the assets. I developed my ideas by recording most of my progress throughout the creation of my model, as well as note down problems and solutions for the problems and solutions for the problems i encountered, as well as use mind maps, basic layouts and mood-boards. For reference material i bought and took pictures of a bowling ball as well as look at different movies and games which involved or solely revolved around bowling. This gave me an in depth look at different types of bowling alleys with different layouts and sizes. This also helped me with scale and positioning of objects. I looked at three different artists who had all created assets that involved bowling, this is because it gave me a chance to look at different processes and ways to create one object, for example a bowling pin. The resources i used were Maya, Photoshop, and Unreal Engine. This allowed me to create a model, create textures for it and my plan was to import my model into unreal but i never got the chance due to other things taking up more time than i expected, for example when i started modelling i tried making a bowling ball but didn't know how to go about making the actual holes in the ball, after looking for a solution i found that i needed to use the boolean tool, this made me change the work i was doing as the boolean tool often messes with topography of the object so i had to spend extra time fixing the mesh making sure it looked decent as well as making sure it worked. Using this method was helpful as it was simple and quick at actually creating the holes but then fixing the mesh took up some time. Another problem that came up making me change some things in my project was not knowing how to create the curve for the underneath of my bowling ball return machine. For this part of my model i needed a particular curve on th bottom of the machine to make sure it looked realistic as well as full-fill the function i wanted it to. This helped me during my project as it taught me a way to make curves which i hadn't seen before, using the three point curve tool. The good thing about this was that i then used that method to create other parts in my scene for example, the frame of the chairs, however i do wonder if there is another way about doing it because it was quite time consuming actually finding this method and then actually using it. Overall by using Maya and Photoshop i had the opportunity to create a model from scratch, which i hadn't done before and then create the textures for that model which i also hadn't done before. Throughout the project my ideas did change as limitations did come up which forced me to change my overall model, for example due to the computer constantly crashing due to amount of polygons i had on my benches, meaning i had to remove a bunch of benches that otherwise would have been in my model. Also i planned to UV everything in my scene but because i didn't know how to UV at all, the amount i could do wa limited to a small amount of objects, however although the amount was small, the Uving i actually did gave me more experience about knowing how to go about actually doing it. If i could change anything it would be starting the Uving earlier as that would have gave me even more practise for the future, as well as make my scene look better overall.

Mind Map and Mood Board

I did make these right at the start of the project but it didn't upload for some reason.

A1 Board Of My Own Work

This is a board of a few random bits of my work for display.

UV and Textures

This is some of my work on UVs and Textures, These were for a few simple things in my Overall scene as i didn't know how to do the more complex objects. This did help quite a lot because it made some of my assets look a lot better than they would have if i didn't do this.

Final Piece

This is my final scene. I am very happy with the outcome although i would have liked for there to be more benches but whenever i added another one my computer crashed due to the high amount of polygons, and i didn't have the time to adjust and fix that.

New Project Proposal + Bibliography

Reference Images: Bowling Ball

These are some reference images of some bowling balls i own. I took them  because it helps me get the positioning and distance between the finger holes.

Software Experiments:Unreal Engine

This is some work we did in Unreal Engine, this helped me practise with the software if i ever plan on putting my own work in there.
The work we did was with our tutors assets that he had created and we just added them in from Maya and positioned them correctly.

Update:

I couldn't find the document of my finished piece which is unfortunate but i did find a screenshot of the assets we applied the textures to and moved into unreal

THESE ARE THE ASSETS WE USED BUT THIS IS NOT MY FINISHED UNREAL ENGINE WORK.

Artist Interpretation: Drawing Of 3D Model

This is my drawing of the model below, i drew this because it was relevant to my topic as well as helping improve my drawing skills in terms of scale and positioning, which i think i did well however the overall quality of the drawing isn't that good.

Artist Research: Sergey Tabakov

These are a bunch of assets which are in some way related to bowling created by Sergey Tabakov.
Although he hasn't explained his process for creating these particular assets the he uses lots of different software depending on what he needs done, ranging from Maya to Zbrush. I decided to look at this artist because of the way he goes about creating his work, taking one thing into lots of different software to get it done, As he does all the UVs, textures and models themselves by himself, making sure every little detail is up to standard.

Artist Research: Mark B Tomlinson

This is a fully textured bowling pin that was made by Mark B Tomlinson. He made this using a mix of software, Blender, Substance Designer, Substance painter and Marmoset Toolbag 2.
Although i don't know anything about the software he used the process would be the same, and his attention to detail as well the accuracy of the texturing is pretty amazing.

Artist Research: José Enrique González

This is a 3D model of a bowling alley done by José Enrique González.
In this piece of work he has done an entire bowling alley including a bar, snooker table area and lots of different assets. From his work i did get a few ideas about where i could change my idea for example by looking at this work i got the idea to add tv screens above where the pins are which would display players scores. To make his work Jose used maya to create all his models and,
made all textures himself.
His work, although its not the best is an example for me on how to go about doing my own work and how things should be displayed and how they should look when its finished.

Under storage on return machine

For my model i wanted to make some sort or rings that go under the tray where some bowling balls could be stored. My only problem with it was making the curve at the end. which was needed to make the shelf on the bottom look realistic as well.

I found that the best way to do it was by using the three point curve tool which is where you place three point and creates a curve on them with one point being the start, another being the middle, and the last be the end.

How to make the curve for the storage under the tray

I started by snapping the poles to the grid, i then used the three point tool to mark where the curve would start and end I then selected the face and then the curve and then pressed extrude, then i increased the divisions so it would actually curve

I then deleted the faces on the end and merged the vertices and combined the object to make the finished shape.

I didn't know how to make a curve like this but after being shown it is quite a simple and easy process to carry out.

Bowling Ball Return Machine Random Green Colour

Whilst working on my return machine it randomly turned green for no reason, to fix it I just assigned a new material.
I don't know why it happened or what caused it but with it there is was quite hard to work on it, and to fix it i just assigned the material to Blinn which got rid of the problem

Bowling Ball Return Machine Tray

This shows my first and second attempt at the tray for my bowling ball return machine, In my first attempt (the left one) there was no real way to tell the scale of the tray with a bowling ball inside, also the mesh was messy and the overall shape was too simple. Also there is nothing there to stop the balls just rolling off.
I fixed all these problems with my second attempt (the right one). I added barriers on the end to make sure the balls stay in. i added two sections for the ball to roll like an actual return machine. I also made the mesh a cleaner so there would be less problems if i decided to change it, and overall it just looks better than my previous attempt.

Bowling Ball Return Machine Support problem

While making my supports i had a problem with the middle of the mesh not looking right due to the way i made it.
I overcame this problem by simply smoothing the mesh, this made it look better as a whole as well as fix the problem

Room Layout For Exhibition

the red squares are where people can place work and the computers can be used if necessary.

Bowling Ball Return Machine Error

Bowling Pin

When i started i had no idea how to actually make the shape of the bowling pins but with a little help i now have a step by step guide which i followed to create the bowling pin

Project Proposal

Bowling Alley Layouts

This shows two different layout for my bowling alley with all the different areas, however due to the time i will not be able to do everything so my main focus will be on the bowling lanes and seating next to it.

Group Critique and Feedback

This is the group feedback where me and a few other students explained or idea to each other and gave constructive criticism on their idea.

Timeline/Schedule For Final Project

This is the timeline for this project which i hope to stick to.

Bowling Alley Moodboard

This is a mood-board of different bowling alleys and the parts inside, i did this to get a few ideas about the size of the bowling alley as well as the furnishings and areas inside.

Decision with reasons

This Shows me choosing which one i was going to carry forward. I chose the Bowling Alley as i thought it would be fun to do, and give me a lot of practise with texturing and modelling at the same time. I also thought it would have more to do that the cinema with more details and assets,

Mind Maps

These mind maps show my thought process in coming up with my ideas, i started by coming up with a bunch of different themes/subjects, and then weighing up the pros and cons of doing them. After doing that i chose one and developed it by looking at different examples, in this case i chose to do some sort of structure, so i looked at different examples of building such as whether they would be for the public, for the military, political and so on.  I then chose to do some sort of public building and divided it into 3 categories, assets, exterior and interior, I then continued to list some of the things that fit into these categories untill i narrowed down my idea even further.
